Humanity is well-versed in the production of distilled spirits. As a matter of fact, it counts among the oldest biotechnological processes in practice. Throughout the previous century, distilling has mostly been reserved for big brands and companies who do it en masse to this very day. However, there has been a rapid increase in the production of spirits at a smaller scale in recent years. These so-called artisan distilleries offer some inventive approaches to production and, out of all of them, here is why you should visit the Archie Rose Distillery.
Where can you find it?
Rosebery (that’s one ‘r’), the quaint inner suburb in the south of Sydney, is a home to a true gem of a distillery. If you find yourself driving along the Botany Road on a lazy afternoon, take a sharp turn on the Heyes Road and search for a nearby address of 85 Dunning Ave. Here is where you will find Archie Rose Distilling Co. If you are worried about barging in “unannounced”, you will be happy to know they do not take table reservations at Archie Rose so, as they say, you can literally “wander in and pull up a stool”. Of course, since this is a distillery, customers under the ripe age of 18 are not permitted to enter the bar.
Where can you have a sit down?
The distillery itself is the first thing you will see. However, do not let the look dissuade you. There is a bar right next to the distillery that showcases the staggering and imaginative variety of spirits which are the personal stamp of Archie Rose. The bar itself has your regular ground floor area and a particularly interesting mezzanine which uses materials such as concrete, steel, oak, and copper to create a unique environment tailored especially for strong spirit aficionados.
What is the staff like?
The staff is amazing and attentive, sharing the founder’s passion for spirit crafting. This means you will get a special treatment if you are in the inquisitive mood. The tasting can be accompanied with exhaustive info about the distilling steps and other interesting factoids related to the spirit production. However, it is important to note you are not merely constrained to these home-brewed drinks. You can also order a glass of wine or beer, and the selection is definitely not something to scoff at.
Can you take a tour?
If you have extra time and money on your hands, you can book a tour of the distillery and learn firsthand about the intricacies of the strong beverage production. The one-hour tour is $10, 00 (Australian dollars) per person and $20, 00 with the on-site tasting included. This means you will be able to savor the freshly produced vodka, sophisticated whisky and gin in the middle of the highly sophisticated artisan distillery.
What makes it interesting?
In fact, there is an integral part of the tour that will leave you speechless and probably ensure you will never forget the experience – you will get a chance to blend your own uniquely distilled “brand” of gin, vodka or whisky. At the end of the visit, you will leave Archie Rose with two 200ml flasks of your own professionally made and one-of-a-kind drink. If that does not knock your socks off, I don’t know what will.
Why is it special?
However, this is not the only way Archie Rose Distillery is unique. It also has its own custom-made way of concocting drinks. In fact, they learned the entire process from the ground up and came up with their own equipment that, on the surface, has all the expected functions but is also filled with small technical peculiarities. The equipment itself is made out of the finest copper from Scandinavia and designed per their specific instructions. It took a whole year to set everything up and create one of the most distinctive distilleries in the world.
